Provimi Veal Lola T-8800
Arie Luyendyk drove this Cosworth powered Lola in the 1988 Indianapolis 500 for car owner Dick Simon. Arie qualified sixth and finished tenth.
I decided to roll the dice on this one and cut the front suspension off so that the horizontal body seam could be filled in. It's a little tricky reattaching everything but it worked out well and should be easier next time around. I tapered the nose slightly to more closely resemble the actual car and the size of the mirrors was reduced. Decals are Indycals and went on without a hitch.
Thank you for looking,
G

Re: Provimi Veal Lola T-8800
Great job on that one!
I've done 12 of the AMT Indy cars using the same method you describe. It's the best way of cleaning up the nose. I haven't done Arie's car because the kit decals were so bad. I hadn't thought to check Indycals for that one but I'll certainly get some soon. The AMTs when bult curbside make a really fun project when you would just like to have something nice for the shelf.
That pit wall display is also an excellent idea

Re: Provimi Veal Lola T-8800
Really nice model Duke, my congrats to you. I used to watch it back then, these days I don't see it on Aussie TV. What kit did you start with ?
I keep picking up these old Indycar kits when I see them at the right price, with a view to some day investing in some Indycals and coming up with a nice shelf full of them.
How do the Monogram Indycar kits of this era compare to the AMT kits ? One other question, is there an easy way to decide which Indycals are suitable for each kit ?
Thanks
Tony Mollica

Re: Provimi Veal Lola T-8800
I'm not a fan of the Monogram kits - they don't look like the Lolas or Marches they are supposed to represent. They come close, but the Lola and March look more like each other than they do the cars they are supposed to be. Also the drivetrains on the AMT kits are much better - again on the Monogram kits they are rather generic approximations. The AMT kits are far from perfect, but next to the Monogram kits they are darn near perfect. Where both companies have issues is with decals - the Provimi kit decals don't represent any car that ever ran (Dutch boy was not on the car in 88, yet it is on the decal sheet). The Monogram Porsche has livery derived from the 1987 Porsche Chassis, not the 1988 March that the kit tries to represent. The AMT Kmart Lola is missing the Amoco markings, and the 1988 Dominos March... well, by the time they got to Indy they were running a Lola - and the car carried the Noid in the number 30 that year, missing from the kit decals but available on mine. All my Lola and March sheets are designed around the AMT kits, so markings that have tight tolerances will not work with the Monogram kits.tonym wrote:How do the Monogram Indycar kits of this era compare to the AMT kits ? Off the top of my head sheets that will work with both AMT and Monogram:
1987 Hannah Auto Wash Lola
1988 Kmart/Amoco Lola
1987-88 Budweiser Lola
1988-89 STP Lola
1988 Dominos (works with March or Lolas)
1989 Hemelgarn Pizza Hut Lola
1989 Hardees Lola
1989 Kraco Lola
Sorry... didn't mean to derail the thread.
Duke - any shots without the engine cover or is this curbside only?
