painting the lotus 79

Post by 87bmwm6 »

I am in the middle of the Tamiya lotus 79 and would like suggestions on painting the black body color. What company would have a base coat clear coat paint selection

Zero paints offer the Lotus Black as a basecoat/clearcoat system.

I would have thought that straight gloss black would do fine, regardless of the manufacturer?!?

I would have thought so too. But the Finisher's Paints offering, Blue Black, is a very very very deep dark navy blue, for those who have a spray gun and want that kind of effect. I would assume that Zero and other offerings are similar.

I would recommend Tamiya's own TS14 for the colour, but using their clear coat TS13 is fraught with danger when decals are to be considered. I have used TS13 in this situation BUT you must apply the first few coasts of TS13 very sparingly, nothing more than a mist coat at the most. Once that has dried thoroughly you can then begin to add more coats until you get the desired depth.

You could opt for an acrylic clear coat instead, as it is far less dangerous to decals. I am sure there are several other clear coat options available, but TS13 works for me.

Why do you need 3 bottles..?? One bottle of the paint would do many, many models. On a 1/20th kit you'll use maybe 10ml or less for the whole model and I think they are 60ml bottles...
