Post by Teles »

A friend is going to Orlando and New York next week and ask me about hobby shops, but I don't know any, can someone help him?
Cheers,
Marcelo.

New York City is a hobby shop wasteland. The only one of note in Manhattan is Jan's Hobbies and that one isn't that good. The best in the metropolitan area are Bayshore Hobbies in Bayshore and Willis Hobbies in Mineola. Both of these are on Long Island.

While there are not really any "hobby only" shops in NYC there are places to buy kits. "Forbidden Planet" on Broadway near 14th street sells kits, mostly sci-fi and fantasy. You can also get Japanese kits at the city's stores that specialize in Japanese toys (there are a few in Greenwich Village).

I was in Orlando 3 years ago on vacation, stayed near Disney and couldn't find much. Seemed to be lots of R/C shops. I didn't want to travel too far from home base, so just went to Colonial Photo and Hobby right in Orlando. Not much there. Might be something new since then but I doubt it.

Wasn't able to find any decent shops in NYC; there is a store that is close to where I live which is around 1:15h drive from NYC.

This store is packed to the roof, mainly carries armor, aircraft and a lot (mainly) US car models:
