1992 Hooters Ford Thunderbird
This model was built to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Alan Kulwicki's Winston Cup Championship.
I used the cage and chassis from a '96-'97 T-bird kit (I finally have a use for these now!). It fits the '89-'93 body pretty good with little modification. I only used a couple of pieces from the older kit like the seat, rear shelf, and shifter. I wired some ignition boxes from a Mello Yello Pontiac, added a window net from a Craftsman truck kit, and exhaust pipes from an AMT stock car. The holes in the wheels were opened up by grinding the backsides with a Dremel tool. I also added Detail Master photoetched seatbelts and a helmet from a ProFinish kit.
The instrument panel was completely scratchbuilt from sheet styrene, sheet aluminum, aluminum tubing, straight pins, and Grandt line rivets.
I also scratchbuilt the driveshaft, steering column, fuel filler and overflow, and weight jack posts.
First up, some of the "in progress" shots:
Some interior details:
Early body work:
Final mock up:
The completed model:
My AK collection so far. The Zerex Ford (bottom left) is the first stock car I ever built back in 1990:
Thank you as always for looking,
G

Really cool build, great colour scheme and a nice collection - well done.
