ATS HGS1 Kyalami 1982 1/20 SAPITO
Hello,
I bought a couple of years ago the book of Christopher Hilton "1982, the inside story of the sensational Grand Prix season", which depict every GP of this dramatic, but so interesting season. A lot of interesting pictures, showing also the small teams are for quite a lot of of them highly inspiring for some new projects.
This picture is taken from the pits in Kyalami, and well, I wanted to build another ATS with a couple improvements on the SAPITO kit
Thanks to James for providing me the specific decals for this Kyalami version and also the special Viceroy ones for the umbrella (I am in a "umbrella" period" after my "rain tires period" we will see where it ended up)
As some of you know the SAPITO kit is a short run curbside kit with all the parts in resin created by our master JamesB. I built 3 different ATS and I wanted to improve this kit by adding some elements :
- I drilled the holes to put the velocity stacks (taken from a JS11 Tamiya kit and modified) as well as a mesh on top of it.
- The resin wing supports were sanded as much as possible to be very very thin. It add quite a lot of realism as these were in reality metal elements. A good paint on it (primer + black + chrome) make it look quite good
- gearbox and rear axle : I also sanded a lot the different elements, to make them more realistic.
- The pilot : I decided to represent Manfred Winckelhock behind the wheel (the according decals are present in the kit) and use also an umbrella from a GF models figure
- The wheels : I used from the scrap box Ligier JS11 wheels and some rubber tires (Wolf models or Ace, I don't remember) which has the right size for the AVON tires.
- PE parts : the radiators, the exhausts/mufflers heat shields, protection grids of the radiators/sidepods intake and rear wing upper supports are all taken from different old PE sets or spare elements I kept from other builds.
And here is the final result, I am really happy with it. The kit require some sanding, filling, but this is quite limited compared to other kits I had in my hands.
I hope you like it

Great work, Jacques!
This is probably the first Manfred Winkelhock car I have seen here on f1m.

Beautiful, Jacques! Looks sleek and fast! Nice work on the colour matching, the drivers figure, the brake lines - and the umbrella!
Hmm.., and I didn't know that Avon tyres were ever used in actual races. Or that JamesB makes kits! So an informative share for me, too. Thanks!
Cheers,
Chris
