Yeah, yet another stupid rule to be abolished in three to five years.
Currently building:
Alfa Romeo 159 (since 2021)
Ferrari F1-75 (since 2024)
Recently finished:
Renault R30 (since 2010)

I believe in less time, since by 2011 is expected a new set of engine/aero rules which is currently being in discussion between tech groups by FOTA and FIA. And those new wings have too small area for advertising, something the teams are in need...BMW wrote:Yeah, yet another stupid rule to be abolished in three to five years.
Anyone remembers back in San Marino 98, when the "X-wings" were banned by the FIA simply because "they were ugly" (Max Mosley's words). Well, FIA, and now what??
But I have to admit that the vortex generator at the back of the car became very interesting, something like it is in the LMS prototypes, and looking a bit like some cars of the early nineties.

Well, look at it on the bright side. We'll all have a lot more money (to invest on older car kits) by not buying any kits of new cars for the next few years... The split rear wing would have been better looking.

Re: Skinny rear wings for 2009
Yes, the cars will look very different!
We'll get used to it.
I never liked the shift to big rear end plates and engine covers in 2004, but after a few seasons I'm starting to get used to them.
Everything about the current cars is tortured and twisted by the rules. Vasselon (spelling?) from Toyota was making an interesting point that if they were allowed a decent defuser, they would get enough downforce there and wouldn't need all the aero bling on the top of the cars. All we're getting now is a whole bunch of different constraints for the engineers to fit within. It's been ages sinces the cars looked 'right' because its been ages since they were a pure aero/downforce exercise.

Re: Skinny rear wings for 2009
I think we have to bear in mind that what we're seeing is an interim solution. I think once we see a complete car designed to the 2009 specs it may look better. The aero will part of a complete cohesive package. Besides..it looks better than that CDG wing they were playing at a couple of years ago.
