1/20 Tamiya - Williams FW11

Post by Steffen_T »

Some time ago I had started a new build. Tamiya's Williams FW11 from the 1986 season, that I would like to build in a late season version.
Tamiya's kit represents the first round of the season, so a couple of modifications were required.

First of all, I took care of the suspension box at the front. All suspension parts were separated so that I could glue the sidewalls to the chassis early on.
Smirkoff's 3d part to do this modification was sadly released after I had done this by myself.
On the picture you can also see the new mirror-support, which I simply did with a brass rod.

I sanded the endplates away and did larger ones using styrene.

For the rearsuspension I needed new cooling ducts. These were made from scratch by cutting and gluing several layers of styrene together.

One of the most prominente features on the late season car were the Turbo inlets.
For these parts I took the inlets of an old Lotus 99T and modified the shape.

Of course this also required the engine cover to be modified.

And this is the car at this point. I think I can soon start to put some primer on it.

Thank you for looking! :D

Lovely progress here, very much like your approach to solving the problems of this kit. Look forward to seeing more of this build.

Nice! Some great modelling going on there.
I will be interested to see what you do with the radiator ducts.
I had great fun doing mine (easy now we have the MFH kit as a reference........!)

Great work. I have the same kit to build at some point. Interested particularly on how you did the front suspension

I also made a suspension support part like this. I also follow the example of Smirkoff :D
It's a big help and gives a much better result because you can fit and sand the two side parts nicely before painting.
