Ferrari F1 87 (1987) Fujimi 1:20

Post by Corpsegrinder »

Finally completed this one, started in 2019 in China but left unfinished as I got stuck in Italy and couldn't go back to China because of covid.
Fujimi kit was great to work with, I added a FMD PE sheet which was nice. Made the seat using sifted flour for suede look and TS-8 and TS-13 rattle can for the body. Quite happy with the result though the engine bay is not so clean as others' I have seen on this forum.

While working on my messy bench I dropped a small amount of super glue on the left sideplate of the rear wing ruining the "digital" decal. Thanks to Steffen_T for providing the size of the logo, I drew one myself and printed it on a white decal sheet, looks pretty good being "home made".

Nice work!

I have a question, Did you cut the rear cowl? or it is an extra turbo charge air intake?

I think from the original kit is not possible to keep the turbo chargers intakes in the right place, when you remove the rear cowl, the turbos come together. How did you do that?

It seems a nice idea.

I did not cut the rear cowl in order to enlarge the air intake hole as in the real car. The turbo chargers intakes already come in two pieces, so the top part can be installed on the rear cowl as per Fujimi instructions. Fortunately it doesn't need to be glued, just slot it inside the hole and that's it.

When the cowl is off I tried to reproduce what I saw on the 87 car in the pits:
Adelaide 1987.jpg
So I only made an extra insert in red colour out of 0.4 mm plasticard, and sandwiched it between the air intake top and bottom part, as in this picture:
I made a hole so that I can insert a pin to hold together top and bottom

Hope the above is clear, I guess there are better or more realistic solutions than mine, but this method did not require a lot of work, just need to make small holes on the air intakes and create a plasticard insert and paint it red!
You actually made a good point, I also have been racking my brains like mad to come up with this idea on how to keep the turbo intakes together when cowling is off, though it's not rocket science it got me thinking for weeks!

It is a very nicely done F1 87.
Your treatment to the turbo intake is clever.
Your printed 'Digital' decal is really nice. May I ask what printer did you use to print it?

Thanks CK!
I used the office Canon C2225 laser printer and a rather cheap A4 white decal sheet (dirt cheap), I had to print 3 different logos with different blues as the laser printers do not have as many shades as the inkjet printers. Out of 3 different blues (what I see on the screen is totally different from the printout) I picked one which was close to the original.
