All excellent information and greatly appreciated. The one issue we all face, you need the paint match the decal sheet you working with.
I have a Tabu sheet for the 1/24 Protar model and the chevrons are a Fluro yellow/green tint.

Sounds like a case to have a Cricut to make vinyl masks...

This topic was discussed a few years back with some feedback from McLaren themselves. I don't know if it was fully resolved but the colors were confirmed by McLaren. Anyway nothing like adding to the confusion
Cheers Tim.

Gravity would meet same problems as us, I fear :
Some pics I see shell and number differ...
I tried a journalist who was there... he does not remember.
Surely pack was golden but that’s nothing to do, as the red pack is also different.
I seem to remember that on Tv it looked different to Williams yellow.
Also logic tells they’d use a dayglo as coherence with red.
Interesting anyway the written reference

Tim, Well remembered, I think that nails it.
The only open question was the proportions of the paint mix. Looks like NuNu got it right!
For the completeness of this thread I will post Chris (Chumley)'s post in full:-

Re: Rosberg M@r!b*r* lights version Estoril 1986 - new evidence in the case!
I see Flemming's post as not being conclusive at all but rather stirring the pot so to speak as if he is the expert. Nigel Roebuck calls the color "sickly greeny-yellow"! nowhere does he refer to it as being "Fluo" yellow but in Flemming's mind that is what "he" has equated that description too. I will trust those who have taken further steps and actually reached out for other information before making my choice. And as Shunter has pointed out you have to find something to match the kit supplied decals or cut your own masks if you plan to go too far off on a tangent. I too remembered that this topic has been beaten to death here at F1M some years ago. Thanks to Chinamalc for digging up what looks to be the best information so far. Looks as though another email is in order to McLaren to find out the brand and ratio of coats to be sprayed if one is to find the exact match though.

Ah now.. I think Flemming just got excited from finding a new piece of information.
There is not far from the lime-green/yellow color described in the article to a flouro-yellow. Both are off-yellow colors.
Unfortunately, as it was before the author was not correct. Color is a very subjective matter at the best of times and when viewed in hard light (like in mid summer Portugal) for a brief moment, the eyes can play tricks on us.
It was brighter (lighter) than the Camel yellow and as the red of the other McLaren to say the Ferrari McLaren was both brighter and fluro, one can think the color was assumed to also be a kind of off-yellow, but in reality it was just a bright yellow, as the emails to McLaren have proved.
Fact is however, that the yellow is just yellow.

Fluo yellow just doesn't look right to me compared to pictures from back the 1986 Portugese GP

That doesn't answer the question (unless you have those paints). And why two yellows? The most definitive evidence would be a photo shot on black and white film - the yellow would be almost impossible to see if it was fluorescent.
