Removing TS13

Post by Ronnux »

Hello!

I’m restoring an old 1/12 Tamiya Lotus 78 and tried to use HG Ovencleaner with Sodium Hydroxide as active ingredient to remove the paint.

I left a small test piece in the cleaner for two days but nothing happens. With every other restorations the cleaner worked fine on acrylic and enamel paints, but on ts-13 it seems it doesn’t do anything..

When I search the net people say that Ovencleaner is the way to go. Am I too impatient?

Other people are talking about isopropyl 91%. I’ve never heard of it and it looks like I can only buy 99% in the Netherlands. Anyone has experiences with Ts13 and isopropyl? Or other fluids they have used to remove Ts13?

Hope someone can help me!

Thanks in advance,

Ron

Tamiya paint remover. Strips lacquer (and all other paints) but doesn’t attack the plastic.

Have you already try with brake fluid or chanteclaire? 😉

Thanks all for the replies!

I ordered the Tamiya paint remover and will try that next week. Is there any specific type of brake fluid you use Lucazena? And chanteclaire is some sort of Italian cleaning brand? Which one do you recommend?

You can use any brake fluid. Get the cheapest one you can find, as you will need lots. :)
The best way I have found is to put the model into a plastic or metal container and flood it with brake fluid for at least half a day, then take the paint of with a toothbrush.

Mind you, you should not leave the model in brakefluid for too long as the brakefluid eats through the plastic thereby making it brittle, etches the paint into the plastic and destroys the surface.
Also, you CANNOT use brake fluid for clear parts.

That sounds a lot like Testor's Easy Lift Off. Has to sit all night, but the paint comes off like a glove.
