Jacques Villeneuve has qualified for Daytona 500 this weekend. A win is a bit of a stretch but getting into the field is cool.

All he has to do is avoid being collected and he'll have a chance.

In all seriousness though - this gives me a reason to watch.

And then he and Toyota need to get him a LeMans win.... He would be in a unique situation then!!! Foyt never did the F1 Champ thing.

I'm kind of surprised he really hasn't tried for a Le Mans win after his second place in 2008.

No. Andretti and Foyt are the only two to win Indy and Daytona.

Foyt: Indy, Le Mans, Daytona
Hill: Indy, Le Mans, F1 Champion, Monaco
Montoya: Indy, Monaco
Villeneuve: Indy, F1 Champion

Fittipaldi: 2x Indy, 2x F1 champion

Alonso: 2x Le Mans, 2x Monaco, 2x F1 champion. (back to back in all three)

Although unlikely, Alonso could match Hill - and do them all back-to-back.

I like some things about the new car in 2022, I will watch some racing if I get a chance, I don:t care about super speedway races as they have nothing to do with racing. I tend to watch a few minutes of a NASCAR race if at all and just look and see what is happening then check the results the next day. I cut cable so If I can:t get a race for free I won:t watch any of it although I might check some highlights on youtube. I will pay a subscription to get all the f-1 races but that is the only thing I will prioritize. I most likely for the first time in over 20 years not watch the Indy 500 this year live, I will try to find a way though.

I hope Vileneuve does well in the 500 though but to me it is meaningless to win a NASCAR race at Daytona. That is a race than any competent professional race car driver given a descent car and some luck can win. Winning a Daytona 500 looks like a racing lottery ticket more about getting lucky than any exceptional skillset. Compare that to the Indy 500 and certain other open wheel races it takes an enormous amount of skill to drive Indy under current rules.

We saw Jimmy Johnson prove that the modern indy car is increadibly hard to drive fast and that the skill set of the drivers at the front of that pack are amazing.

The NASCAR folks are talented but Daytona is not a great exhibit of that talent, more so tracks like Richmond, Darlington, Martinsville and some of those are greater tests of driver talent in the Cup car format.

I agree - a lot of drivers get their only wins at Daytona and Talladega and never do anything anywhere else. It's not a measure of skill.

Totally agree. McDowell’s win last year showed that. He was in right place at right time. Superspeedway racing in NASCAR levels the field. It’s where smaller, less funded teams can have success because of drafting and because big accidents can (and often do) take the top contenders out of the race. But I actually like watching it for that reason. Smaller teams almost never win at Darlington or Richmond, but Daytona and Talladega can surprise.
