How do you glue painted parts?
Hello,
when I build my models i mask every area which have to be glued either with masking tape or with liquid mask before painting. It works perfect but it is more than a lot of Work. The reason is because Plastic glue is not working well on painted areas.
So I want to know how you do it. Do you use ca or white glue or something else? Special glues? Special techniques? how does it hold over the years?...
I'm looking forward to you answers,
Marcel

What you report to do is the proper way.
I am lazier and just scrap paint from areas to be glued. It works fine for me

I also mask with tape or liquid because this is the best way to assure a strong bond. James is right, you can do it also by scraping away paint in small areas but the longer, harder way that you're doing it is best in my opinion. I mostly use gap-filling CA to bond everything because it's just stronger, but that's just my preference. I do think that my bonded parts are pretty strong as a result though.
Best,

I do exactly the same. Too lazy to mask those areas to be glued.JamesB wrote:What you report to do is the proper way.

Re: How do you glue painted parts?
I've started masking, as some of the kits (I'm looking at you Tamiya TS050) are getting so precise that paint causes parts to not fit properly (and yes, I'm applying too much paint...). For older kits I'll scrap or sand away paint to get a better fit.
I typically only use CA glue. Liquid glue tends to go places I don't want it to no matter how precise I try to be. I might start using two part epoxy for some of the multimedia kits I am building to get a better bond between parts. I'm not looking forward to building the rear wing for my Stewart for example.

Unless strength is required i always use acrylic glue. Any mistakes are easily removed with a wet Q-tip (Cotton bud or paint brush wet with water) It makes me look like a pro!!

nice insights and good to hear that others also go the hard way. so i will go on. And I use different glues, too, depending on what to glue. Acrylic glue is best to glue photoetched parts on painted areas. never lost the small pieces and no damages in the paint by the glue.
