Great pics. Now I realize how bad the silver looks on my model. Way too grainy.

Interesting, the car has the outboard brakes for the rear. Explains why the 1/18th Minichamps Lotus are modelled incorrectly.

Good catch Steve. You will notice that the brackets for inboard brake calipers are still there because in typical Chapman fashion they did double duty like being the lower mount for the shock/damper.

Diemen racer, what VanDiemen chassis do you race? I'm assuming that's where your name comes from

Re: Detail Chassis photos Lotus 79
I raced a Van Diemen RF-85 in SCCA Formula Ford for 20+ years. I just sold it last year. I loved the car but needed a change. I found I was getting a little too wide for it and the mandatory use of a HANs was the last straw, I just could not get comfortable in it or belt myself in easily. The RF-85 was meant for teenagers on their way to F1 not 50+ year old men who sit at a desk all day. I replaced it with a 1979 Crossle 35f Formula Ford, very nice car, generous sized cockpit and I only have to compete against cars from the same era. In SCCA the RF-85 still has to compete against the latest cars. Really not fair for a 30 year old design and chassis. I occasionally race a friend's SCCA Formula E which was built by Van Diemen.
The shadows ruin this photo but you can see how much chassis design changed in just a few years. The 1979 Crossle was one of the dominant chassis in the USA before the new cars went aerodynamic after the Swift DB-1 debuted in late 1983. Like the DB-1 the 1985 Van Diemen RF-85 was super skinny for straight line speed.

Very cool! I've driven a 2000 RF-00 in the F2000 Championship Series. It's a fantastic car.

Nice. Those Van Diemen RF-00's are great cars.

Great visor cam video taken today at Laguna Seca from this Lotus I photographed. This makes me remember why I loved F1.

Blimey that monocoque is shiny - I bet more than at any time in '78!
