Correct blue for a Tyrrell 019 ?

Post by tonym »

Hi Everyone,
Is Tamiya TS-15 the correct shade of blue for a Tyrrell 019 ? I don't have access to Zero paints here in Australia, so I think my options are limited to Tamiya of Gunze paints.
Cheers

I would have to say TS15 looks about the closest you'll get in the Tamiya line up. Everything else is either to light or is metallic. Others might have better ideas, but If i was building the 019 that along with ts26 pure white is what'd i'd use
And so you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high.

The 019 blue looks dark, but not as dark as Tamiya's TS-55 dark blue. And TS-44 brilliant blue looks to light.
So i think TS-15 is your best option.

Theres also someone here who converted their 020 to the 019. I remember reading about it.
Maybe he can advise on the blue he used.
But you need to look for that thread.

Hey Tony, nice to see ya.
Not quite sure. It's a bit like painting the Rothmans cars with TS15. ANd I like it because is really quite comfy to use. I have used quite a few cans of it :D but it seems the 15 is a bit dark. The Tyrrell 018 and 019 look o have a brighter, slightly more purple blue. Though I guess there's not a TS that gives that.
If you're to use TS spray cans, yes TS15.
Straight-from-the-can or decanted/airbrushed?

Hi Tony,

Yes, TS15 is close enough, I think is your best option.
Good luck on this my friend.

I heard rumours, and have seen a graphic of the the car, that the blue and white livery of the 019 was originally intended to be Rothmans sponsored. Could be that the blue matchs a Rothmans blue? The picture I am referring to is in the GP car story book on the 019. Well worth getting.
What kit are you making?

Thanks everyone. I've got the S27 kit for this one, and I've also seen that profile with Rothmans markings in the GP Car Story book, which is excellent value. I just can't read English to fully understand it.
I'm trying to build a few of the cars from 1990 so this is to go with the Ferrari and Williams that I've already completed, and the Lotus 102 and Leyton House that will be completed soon. More to follow.

I'll go ahead with TS-15.
Cheers

I've nearly pushed the button on the S27 kit myself a few times but have decided to try a convertion from the Tamiya 020. Be interested to follow your build and hear your opinion on the S27 kit.

I'm liking it so far Daveyman. If it's helpful to you I could post some side by side comparison photos of the 019 vs the 020. That might smooth the way for you.

That would be great. Thanks. It's the profile and shape of the airbox that seems most different between the two. The rear bodywork on the 019 looks like a direct carryover from the 018 to me, the 018 is even better looking with the low nose.
