Shanghai?

Post by F1Xena »

Hi all,
Does anyone know of any model shops in Shanghai?
I get there reasonably often (actually there now!) but have had very little luck finding anything to do with modelling. One would think that with a manufacturer like Trumpeter growing like crazy that there may be shops in China.
There used to be a shop in East Nanjing Road, but that is no longer there. The only other I am aware of was in Nanchang Road, but with all the new building going on in that area, it wouldn't surprise me if that is gone too....it was in a very old building, and had a lot of very old looking models!
Thanks
Tania

There was an article about Shanghai in recent Finnish modelling mag "mallix" ...I'll look those up for you when I get home after work.

Hi F1Xena,

I love the reports you did on the Tokyo model shops!

I travel to Shanghai quite often, there are not many of the above links (shops) left.

Lion Roar has gone, so has the shop at 708 Changle road and the one in peoples square near the Ferrari dealer

These are the ones I know were there last month:-
In the underground station below peoples square - very small not worth it, I cant remember which exit it is near (5 or 6?)- the station is now huge compared to a couple of years ago!
North west - Luxin Park/HongKou football stadium, round the bottom of the stadium on the outside is a row of shops, one of which is the biggest Tamiya model shop in Shanghai. (line 8 HongKou football stadium)
There are two small shops opposite each other north of the YuYuan Gardens in the old town at the east end of FuYou road on the south side (line 10 YuYuan gardens south)
Just south of the junction between GuangZhong road and YanChang road there is a nice small shop with a huge RC car track out back (line 1 YanChang road south)
No 595 NanChang road (very small two floor shop), have not been there for several months - behind the site of the old XiangYang market (line 10 Shaanxi road)

To be honest not many of these are worth it - only the one at HongKou. Your best bet is to search Taobao online and get a local friend to by for you, prices are cheap and shipping is around 10/15RMB per order, but generally only the main suppliers are represented Tamiya, Revell, Ebbro, Fujimi, Top Studio detail sets, etc - so no Studio27 or MFH! All are listed by the code number so it helps to know this before you search.

If you find any others let me know - I will be there in September!

Malc.

If none of the above mentioned shops are good enough, get on http://www.taobao.com, this is where I buy my stuff, prices are OK, shipment quick and cheap (10 to 20 rmb and within 3 days of the order I receive the goods) and surprisingly enough the choice is huge (at least for F1 models), I would have never expected it. If you have a friend there, get him/her to place the order and receive the parcels which can pass to you once you get to Shanghai.
I have placed orders there and will keep doing so, so I can recommend it

Here we go, mind you the article was written a year ago (so much for my recent issue...)
3g model, wuzhong road 405, building 3 apartment 101. Open 10am-8pm mon-fri and 10am-16pm sat. Mainly caters to chinese mail order clients but wellcomes inshop business aswell. Kinda hard to find tho, look for afv club logo on street level window.

They stock Italeri, hasegava, dragon, academy, afv club, bronco, icm, voyager and others. All packed in to a 3-4 room streetlevel apartment. Run by Ms. Yang and her family.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much guys for all the info!
I have recently changed departments in my job and no longer get to Hong Kong which was the best place on our network for models and equipment. Fortunately I still get to Japan, where the choice is great but not as cheap as Hong Kong.
Shanghai is a regular destination, so I wanted to find model shops to visit...really just to fill in time! With the information you have given me I'm sure I will be able to fill in some days!
I will let you know how I get on during my next trip, which won't be until the end of August or early September.
Thanks again
