Tamiya vs Hasegawa... an observation

Post by indycals »

Based on the JPS and Martini decals I'm selling, it appears Tamiya is outselling Hasegawa by about 3 or 4 to 1 - just my unscientific observation.

It's a shame because I think Hase has done a great job and deserves better selling results.
Go Hase! :)

Well, if you take my situation - we get Tamiya available locally, Hase I have to import. Guess which one I'll be going for, even though I'd love to lay my hands on the Hasegawa version (as well).

Well, I'm doing a 1/48 F-16C for a club challenge currently, and I bought both the Tamiya and Hasegawa Block 25 versions, and the difference in quality and accuracy is incredible, the Tamiya being leaps and bounds ahead. Granted the Tamiya is newer, but it's still worth the extra dollars, imho.

I would not be surprised by these numbers. For many, Hasegawa is an unknown player in 1/20 scale F1 kits. I received my Hasegawa Lotus last week and more than satisfied with my kit. But then again, I've built countless Hasegawa non automotive kits and had a very good idea of the quality. They do take a slightly different approach to kit manufacturing than Tamiya, but they are not that far apart. Hasegawa have offered numerous re-releases of kits over the years.

I bought one of each...

my comments
Hasegawa - Best engine, exhaust pipes, wheels options, best details
Tamiya - Best cowling, best fiting, best chassis

Cheers

There's also a little difference in the kit decals:
Hasegawa has Badyears so you can build a model in a historically correct livery (non tobacco GPs) OOB.
Tamiya has no Badyears so you'd need those, at least, if you care about this issue.

So for the average builder it's a) availability b) the known quality of the Tamiya kits
while for the advance modeler it's partly c) the decals in the kit.
