1/12th Alfa 179C
Seems like there is a lot of interest in building 12th scale lately. I will add to the mix. My latest build is the Protar Alfa 179C Mario Andretti car. The kit is a little better than typical Protar, which means that it needs a lot of work to make things fit. The tub was no exception. I needed to fill in the gap between the upper and lower half with thin plastic strips. The next challange is the engine which will be moderately detailed.

Re: 1/12th Alfa 179C
Finished up the engine today. I used various Testors buffing metalizers and dark gray weathering powder. The cam covers are painted with All Clad pale burnt metal I added a few A/N fittings just for show. The intake stacks are S27 for the Ferrari 312. For the injection lines I used .025 silicone tubing. I really like the way it draps. Not stiff like what comes in the kits. I get it from http://www.a-msystems.com. For the plug wires I used black tubing for the boots and fine gauge electrical wire. I thought the orange looked good so that's what I went with. Next I will start on the body work.
I need some advice from you experts. The body is cast in a bright red. The car will be painted in M@r!b*r* livery. I will need to paint everything in white first. How do I keep the red plastic from bleeding through into the white? I tested a small piece first priming with white and then Tamiya pure white. I could see the red. Need to solve this before going any further. I sure wish Protar had used white plastic like Tamiya.

Dave - I find in that situation it's best to use Tamiya gray primer first to block/obscure the color, then Tamiya white over that in a few coats to set the white base. For some reason the white primer covers better once there are a few coats of gray down rather than white on bare plastic.

AJ

Exactly my advice, as AJ says, the gray primer first built up in light coats to avoid bleeding and the same with the white primer and paint coats, "light coats". It also helps block any darker colour inside the cockpit (usually black) effecting the outside paint look...AJP01 wrote:Dave - I find in that situation it's best to use Tamiya gray primer first to block/obscure the color, then Tamiya white over that in a few coats to set the white base. Hi, Great work on the engine and I agree,it's best to use gray primer this will also give the white more "depth".

You're doing a terrific job on this Dave. I've never seen one properly finished so please keep up the good work. Tempted to get my old kit out now.
