dna-one wrote:My problem isn't coverage, it is shade. It isn't what I'd call a true Ferrari red. I've got some time to think about this. I found a website that offers aftermarket decals for this car where the white backing is much better. I really don't want to paint the underlying areas white because I think it is inviting a mistake. If there is a way to mess it up, I'll find it!
Here's how I'd do it:
Strip all the paint off.
Paint the red plastic silver.
Allow to dry real good.
Prime w/ Tamiya white primer.
Paint the white parts Pure White (TS-26).
Mask off the white and paint the red with either Italian Red (TS-5) or Bright Red (TS-49) depending on the exact hue you're after.
Couple coats of clear.
LIGHTLY wet sand
One more coat of clear
Decals
LOTS more clear (4 or 5 coats)
Wet sand w/ 2000 grit
Polish
Sometimes the red plastic is prone to "bleed" through the white in places for some reason. I've had this happen on a couple of kits that are molded in red. A friend told me this lttle tip and it works real well (thanks S10man!).
I have more progress the back of the body masked, primed and yellow painted.
Now i have the hang of it, see no bleeds. Finally getting the hang of it
Hope you Enjoy!
