Another method for trying close up shots is to mount your camera on a tripod,manual focus,starting at the nearest point of your subject,then each subsequent photo you adjust the focus very slightly out.Software will combine the images together to give you an image fully in focus not possible with a single image.The process is known as 'Focus Stacking' and is used in landscape and macro photography.
