Hello All,
Work is still progressing on the Lotus 72E, continually slow as ever  .

I am still in the planning and prepping stage, sanding, filling, sanding some more.
The tub and cockpit parts are assembled largely to the point of being ready for primer.
Tub in Process.JPG
Some of the body panels have had gaps filled and cleaned.

Whereas some of them still need work  .
Body Parts in Process 2.JPG
The rear wing had the rivets removed, and all necessary holes drilled with a 0.35mm bit in the pin-vise.

That's where we stand at the moment. Should be able to get some primer on parts this weekend. Onward and upward.
Cheers,
Chris

Prep work looks good. Can already tell this'll be a cool model when done.

Hello All,

While the body parts having been primed are drying, I figured I'd get started on the powertrain as well, and get it assembled. So, I cut all the parts from the sprue with the engine block, and glued them together. They went together with no drama, and made a nice DFV for a .........72C  .
Engine Block - 72C.JPG
Unfortunately, I am building the 72E, and the 72E uses a different cover to facilitate mounting to the monocoque. I got the wrong part from the sprue, due to lack of checking the part numbers  . Fortunately, I have the 72C kit also, and was able to pilfer the necessary common parts to build the correct engine.
Engine Block - 72E & 72C.JPG
The moral of this story: Read and follow the instructions boys and girls  .

I guess one positive outcome is that I got a jump-start on the 72C when I get around to building it.

Diversity overcome, onward and upward.
Cheers,
Chris

Hey, Chris!

Wow, déjà vu!!!

Ok. Be careful with puttying the joint between parts C15 and C19 (the tub and space for the driver's hand to operate the gearshift lever). You need a notch there, opposite the one molded on the left side of the cockpit, to slide in part D10 (the dashboard).

I made the same mistake, but it's an easy fix with a scribing/sculpting tool.

Good luck for the rest of the build!

Oh crap...made the same mistake with my block! Well here is my chance to build some plumbing on mine that I neclegted before!

Nice work Chris!
Some things I have noticed; there are a buch of panel lines missing from the tub, cockpit is wrong aroung gear changer rod tunnel, some reference show rivets being neutral color.

Hello All,

Thanks for the nice comments, always happy if people can enjoy.
Work is still proceeding on the 72E, still stuck in the planning and prepping phase  .

I've nearly got all the body panels cleaned up and primed.
Rear wing has all the rivet holes drilled, and primed.
Rear Wing Plane.JPG
Air induction scoop was puttied, sanded, primed, sanded some more, primed, sanded some more, and primed again. Finally all the seams were eliminated and looks clean.
Air Scoop Primed.JPG
Side pods were assembled, puttied, sanded, primed, sanded,.......OK, you get the idea.....and primed again. Also finally all clean with no seams visible.
Side Pods Primed.JPG
I've also been working on the powertrain a bit. I got together every hard-copy reference I could find on the Lotus 72,
Lotius 72 References.JPG
....and have been investigating and planning the cooling and lubrication systems. Once again the DFV reference from Speed Details saved me in determining where everything starts and ends. I highly recommend picking these up if you are building a car with a DFV.

Although Ebbro included a few of the coolant lines, many are missing, and I had to drill the necessary holes on the engine and associated pumps, which are molded as a part of the bottom cover. There is a line that runs from the pump on each side of the engine to the side of the block, and while Ebbro includes the inlet on the block, it is missing from the pump. So, I decided to add it, using styrene rod, drilled out, and simply glued in place with CA glue. A little shaping with an Exacto knife to start, then some putty and will be sanded intpo shape. A small piece, but a good improvement.

Engine Status 1.JPG
Transmission is assembled. As I plan to replace all the fasteners with machined metal pieces, the necessary holes have been drilled, though I'm sure more will needed  .
Transmissions Assembled.JPG
So, that's where things stand for the moment. Next up is to to get the tub fully assembled, cleaned and primed, then get some primer on the engine after finishing the cooling system layout.
Onward and upward as always!!
Cheers,
Chris
