according to others in the group it's a chemical thing. you'll have to use a different kind of paint. maybe someone else can help out with the specifics of why it happens.

Thanks Grumpy (although your comment is not exactly encouraging :) )!

I wiped the hose I still have to attach and I guess I leave the others be, trying to remember not to touch them..

Still, if anyone can come up with a method to fix it - please let me know.

But back to my original post: what do you guys think of the stained metal. I know it is not easy to see, but for the first time I used a method I read about approximately 25 years ago (oh god am I old) in a German modelling magazin. You cook the metal sheet togehter with egg shells to achieve a stained look.

Update:

I painted that extra piece of hose silver with enamel paint from Model Masters - - and it was dry after 3 - 4 hours (the Testors still is not).
