Tyrrell 020 conversion ideas

Post by martinpesce »

As a kind request to the conversion specialists and enthusiasts on this forum:

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a conversion project using a Tyrrell 020 as the basis? Leaving aside the 020B and 020C variations. My initial shortlist (in order of increasing difficulty) looks as follows, noting that none of them look particularly straightforward:
- Benetton B191
- Ligier JS37
- AGS JH27
- Larrousse LC92

Looking forward to your views and perhaps I am missing some better candidates! Even if we do not get beyond the brainstorm phase it could still be fun…

I think the closest match is the Tyrrell 019 from 1990.
Everything else might become very difficult.

It's an interesting concept. Kind of like using the MP4/13 to make a Jaguar R7.
I would like to see what people have to say

Cheers

The 019 isn't that easy either, I still have a Transkit from Thumb Creation here and the chassis is a little different. But of course a lot is possible...

Thanks Steffen,

I am afraid you are right on both points, trouble is I am already building a 019 at the moment so the challenge is to come up with something else :D

Also do not mind some drastic surgery, but ideally you have a good part of the overall shape that you can re-use. Aside from (perhaps) the B191 I had not seen an obvious candidate. A longer shot could still be the brabham bt60, but it will need a big nose job at least!

Another quite typical could be Ferrari F93A.
Closer in fact than B191, on which sidepods are taller, chassis lower...
The Brabham is a really good idea  and I made decals for it
Anyway all are a bit of a nightmare

F93A is a nice suggestion James (I knew you would be up for this discussion :-)), overall shape looks pretty good - maybe because they are both Postlethwaite cars? Narrower tyres can be done, if I am correct also suspension width will need adjustment?

Will keep the Brabham as another option in mind, still need at least one in my collection I feel!

Thanks all for thinking along

F93A conversion is a good idea. I was thinking to combine the monocoque of F92AT from Fujimi/Modelers and merge the floor of Tyrrell 020 and side pods. The decal of F92AT can be mostly reused...

Nevertheless, and I´ve been there quite a few times, the thing is that you end uo seeing that everything is... too difficult, and doubtfully worth it.
Will, :D if you happen to have an F93A chassis available, then I assume you also have the sidepods. The F93A is basically an F92 with the gap with the floor plasted and sealed!
Honestly if you fill that gap (not that it´s a "boom like that" oppereation, I know) you have a decent F93. The crucial sidepod profile is quite the same. That does not happen with the Tyrrell. I know I suggested it, but with the caveat that they´ll be a nightmare!

Thanks a lot Will and James for sharing your thoughts. I should have added that I am looking at this in 1/24 (the scale nobody likes :-)) so adding the F92a in the mix will not be an option.

I also take your point that the similarities are mostly superficial and will need correction beyond reason to make it perfect.

In summary, useful and fun thinking exercise, will focus on progressing my “current” FW24 to BAR 006 conversion for now and keep this on the longlist for a bit (F93a with question mark and BT60 with an even bigger one :-))

Thanks again for the help!
