MFH 1/12 tyres

Post by Chumley »

Hi

I have seen some horror stories of the Tamiya tyres delaminating and collapsing over time.

I see that MFH make a set as replacements but they aren’t cheap. Does anyone have any? Are they made of something a little different or are these as susceptible to breaking down over time too?

Thanks

not sure what they're made of (hiro site don't tell) but i suppose rubber-ish/rubberlike resin. Wall thickness is 5mm, so they're firm.

Tamiya tires were made 40 years ago, guess industry learned since then and material(s) got new & more durable specs although only time will tell.

I've bought a couple of the 1980's tyres in 1/12 and I like them a lot. Much thicker and stiffer than the Tamiya sets and the prepainted logo's are really nice. The only thing I don't like is that there is a small tab from the injection mold that you need to cut off yourself. Since it's rubber it's impossible to cut off without leaving some kind of mark and I've resigned myself to displaying the cars with the these parts pointing down and hidden.

Thanks for the info.

If they are injection moulded, then I guess they are more like the S27 tyres you get in Multimedia kits.

As I haven’t built one of those, do you think these could be sanded?

I have replacement tires and rain tires for most of the older Tamiya kits. The newer MP4/6, 641/2 and FW14B tires will be ready mid year next year. My tires cost less than MFH tires and they are made of flexible resin. Actually it is the same stuff that elastomer springs are made of in MTB suspension forks so they are really tuff. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi

I have a couple of the MFH sets P-1158. They are a perfect replacement in rubber for the original Tamiya tyres. They come with Goodyear Eagle preprinted. Excellent.

+1 for me. I have the 312b tires and they are great. For sure for the 641/2. I have couple to build. Even for 1/8 scale. I have a pair of the Rosso Ferrari 643 kits also.
