Tamiya Benetton B188 1/20 F1 1988

Post by aracefan »

Tamiya #20021
Benetton B188 Ford F1 car - 1988
kit release - early 1989

Kit was built OOB, with Scale Motorsports Yellow CF for the radiator intakes.
Tamiya TS spray cans and detail with brush and Tamiya paints.
Easy Decal (replacement decals) from ebay, the originals were a bit yellowed.

The most challenging kit (read: paint job) I've attempted to date. Had a lot of fun and learned quite a bit too (had never used any CF decal of any kind before...) and am looking forward to building some more.

Here's the original box when it got delivered, pretty good shape except for the big piece of packing tape across the top.

On to the Car! I'll get better at pics (if I can grab some with the good camera I will)

In the case on the shelf where she belongs!

Thanks for looking, and tip & tricks or C&C always welcome!

Really nice model, congratulations!
I have 2 questions:
-can you tell me the TS spray codes for green and red you used?
-how do you masked the colors?

Hey Redbox, thanks for the kind words!! The Tamiya TS codes are:
TS-35 Park Green
TS-49 Bright Red
And I masked it using Tamiya Masking tape (various sizes) and for large areas i used blue painters tape and cut pieces of sandwich bag, to reduce the use of the more expensive Tamiya Masking Tape.

Again, thanks for the kind words - this paint job was a real challenge and I was very intimidated by it, but it came out pretty good. Has a couple of [smacks forehead] dang-it's, but overall it was enjoyable to see it through.

It is a nicely finish B188.

This is not an easy build and you have done a great job.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

By the way, in the background with your B188 inside the case, there is a Mercedes F1. It is the Revell W01?

Haha!! Yes, I was very worried about it and took extra time between coats (colors) as I was using the spray cans... mostly just tried not to "glob" it on. Focused on trying to get multiple light coats, like what you can get when using an airbrush.

Thanks vekkuli!!

It was fun and a real challenge as I've stated, but honestly, the two support wires that stabilize the rear wing were an extreme challenge in themselves. 8)

The livery in this car has to be one of the most difficult liveries to paint in a model and you did it great, congratulations!
