IN A NUTSHELL: Ferrari 312T = T2 (77)?

Post by JamesB »

That's it!!
Let's assume I have an idle 312T (Protar, Tamiya? not sure) and I ask myself if some external easy surgery would lead to an acceptable 1977 (early/mid) 312 T2?
As I am too forgiving with such ideas, I proceed to extend the question to the board f bodywork spotters..
What you think?

I think I might be OK with just (of course) removing the phrigian engine intake, then retouching the rear wheel fairings, fattening a bit the engine cover/cockpit sides, include the frnt small NACAs, making the nose a bit more "beluga", leaving the side exits where they are... and yes all the small stuff as wings, support of rear, mirrors....

Make it or break it?
TIA, guys!

I have to check at home all the annotations I did about 75-77 Ferraris, but from what I remember the shape of front of the cockpit is a bit different, because of the front roll hoop introduced in 76. The rear roll hoop is in a different angle and design, too, a bit more upright, and near the driver's head. Even with all the modifications for sure is a doable project.

The T2 was lighter than the T. Most difficult is that the body of the T 2 was narrower. The radiators were fixed to the chassis under quite a different angle. Try and find cutaways of both cars on the web. The radiator outlet on the T is bigger than that of the T. It depends on what you want: if you go for a superficial likeness you can do it. If you want a correct T2 I’d rather try and find a Protar kit or the Chevron transkit for the Tamiya. Occasionally they pop up on Ebay, they are not cheap, though. Best thing: save up for a Hiro kit of the T2 1977 or 1976.

Thanks to all four, you are awesome.
Thanks fr all the views and details. Yes, Spiry, that ne is quite inspiring! :D
Yes the idea is more to make use of the available stuff rather than going for ultra accuracy, let alone buying more expensive stuff.
I didn't know abut the narrowness, interesting subject!
THX again!

I have rebuilt parts of the bodywork in plasticard and then engraved the caps in an oblique position using those in the kit as a template.

Yes, it's a 312 T2 Protar cockpit recovered from a scrap on ebay over a 312T Tamiya kit !

I think you can "easily" adapt the cockpit of the t2 1976 Protar to make the early version of the T2 1977 using the same technique...

Often there are damaged or incomplete kits on ebay for little money, they are perfect for the purpose!
