Metric Aluminium Tube...?

Post by Paul_OFarrell »

Hi All,

Having fumbled around on Google for the best part of an evening, I am struggling to find lengths of specifically sized metric aluminium tubing.

I can find it in 1mm increments with an Outer Diameter of 2mm upwards, but what I am looking for is tubing in 0.5mm increments.

For example:

Outer Diameter 3.0mm Inner Diameter 2.5mm
Outer Diameter 2.5mm Inner Diameter 2.0mm ...

and so on, down to

Outer Diameter 1.0mm Inner Diameter 0.5mm

Aluminum is preferable as it is easier to work by hand than Stainless steel or brass.

Any ideas / feedback / suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Paul

Hi all,

Thanks Joaquin and Orso, Albion Alloys was my first choice.

Their standard range of Ali tube ranges from OD 1mm to OD 5mm in 1mm increments. I was hoping for 0.5mm increments instead.

Interestingly, their micro aluminium tube selection ranges from OD 0.3mm to OD 1mm only. I had hoped their micro ali tube range would extend beyond their micro brass range, but sadly it doesn't. I was hoping to find ali tube in OD 3mm - 2.5mm - 2mm - 1.5mm - 1.0mm etc.

Ah well, it looks like I will need to work with brass tube instead. Albion's micro brass tubes range from OD 0.3mm to 2.0mm in 0.1mm increments. Probably best to grab a packet of each size...

Thanks for the replies folks.

I got some pretty thin wall tubing from HLJ, but it was not aluminum. I think it was nickel. A tad expensive but i needed for spoke nipples for a 1/12 bike I am building.

Hi Danibear, what is the longest possible tube you can make? I imagine that will be restricted by the length of the drill bit you'd use to drill it out, yes?

I was hoping for some lengths of at least 50mm.

PM sent.

Yeah i guess only doing it with a lathe will bring you the sizes you need, no supplier around with this dimensions cause the wall thickness will be in 0,25mm steps to get such dimension, but no one offers this.
Maybe there is a solution with medical needles, but don`t know if their lenght will be enough and it is a hard material, not soft like Alu.
Take a stand!

Hi Paul,

If you are not looking for exact size, you can use 1/16" (1.59 mm) and 3/32" (2.38 mm) aluminium tubes with the standard 1, 2, 3 mm aluminium tubes.
