Completion time

Post by Leftkeys »

Like a lot of you, I’m enthralled with MFH”s 1/12th kits. And they’re coming out at a rapid rate with awesome selections. At the moment, I have 1 in process, 5 on the shelf and 2 inbound. At the rate the 330P4 is going it’s going to take me a year + to finish. And i’m old enough to start thinking about how to finish the existing stash. And I’m sure there will be future kits that get added, too.

Can you guys share your construction strategies? Maybe there’s a better way for me to make progress. And what’s the average time you take to finish?

I get that everybody works at different speeds (I’m getting quicker as I work more) but I sure would like to hear how the experts put the stuff together. Thanks, guys!

Whenever i work on more than two models at a time it slows every5ing else down. Saying that, im currently working on six (ford wrc, arrows a23, sauber c30, 99 cart car, rbr 6 and albine rally car) im finishing up the ford now and then gong to concentrate on the cart car and the alpine one.

I normally work on one at a time. The 12th scale MFH kits take me about 3 months to complete. The 250TR has been the exception. The wire wheels are a drag. The first one took about three hours on and off to complete. The other 4 are still in the box. I want to start work on the 917/30. :)

I always have two model kits going at the same time.
Currently on my bench is a Tamiya Ducati 916 and a Monogram/Revell AG/Fujimi parts bin 911 RS.

I have tried working on more than one kit at a time and it does not work for me. The only exception is prep work. I spend many weekends a year at a second home and often take a new kit and do part prep. I nip the parts off the sources and clean each up with knife and sanding stick, separate and bag by color. Once done it will go back in the stack until started.

I generally work on 2 at a time, recently working on a Ferrari F2001 and F2003-ga simultaneously. This turned out to be a bad idea because the two cars were very similar. I started the suffer from fatigue. So I ditched that idea and just concentrated on the Lotus t127 after finishing both Ferraris.

I'm now in the position to pick a new kit / kits to work on. And I think I'm going to do 2 at a time again, but pick two cars which are very different from each other. And as I'm still suffering from Ferrari Fatigue neither if them will be red*

*they might be if I chose to do a brabham or alpha, or of the Ebbro lotus 49 releases in the UK in the next few days.

I like to keep a flow going

Right now working on 3 MFH kits, on the bench,

99T, Eagle Westlake and 917/30, all different levels of complexity

It allows me to tinke with each, decaling, detail painting, assembly and wiring as my mood fits

I paint all of a kit in a few days and then repack the parts or put on bench

I will then focus on one and finish

Average time is 3 months on a MFH kit

I still have several in stages of completion

787B, FW11B, Cobra, 917LH, F2008, 488 GTE Risi for example

And several in prep and painting, F187 and 126C4

But slowing down buying for now until something really strikes me

I have been building my models since late 1980's. So far I have 6 cars and 7 aircrafts finished.

I have about 100 models, mostly cars. Every box has been worked on to some degree. Some are about 10% and some at 90% complete. I usually have about 4 models that I work on the same time. I rotate through different models when I encounter technical difficulties that I cannot have a solution right the way.

Hopefully, I will have a lot of models get finished in a short time. :D
