Late Season McLaren-Ford MP4/8
Hi everyone,
Here are some pictures of my recently completed McLaren-Ford MP4/8 from Tamiya. This is my first F1 build ever and my first car since I was in middle school. Modifications include removing the bargeboards and cutting down the rear wing endplates. I added the S27 carbon decal set, which was extremely frustrating. They were brittle and none of them were the correct size or shape. I scratchbuilt the front bulkhead and brake master cylinders. The rear includes full plumbing and wiring, as well as some scratchbuilt ancillaries. Although it was a long (3 months) and often annoying build, I'm really pleased with it. The body is painted with TS-26 and TS-36 Tamiya paints, shot through a Grex airbrush.
Comments and critiques are always welcome. Thanks for looking,
Jake

Hey Jake,
One of the most beautiful F1 cars ever IMHO, especially without those massive barge boards. Good choice!
This is the first time that I remember seeing this built as Häkkinen, and not Senna or Andretti.
Cheers,
Greg

Shut up this is your first F1 kit! Wonderful! Amazing what you've done, i'm really inspired to go build a late season car just like yours!
And so you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high.

I agree! I've started my Senna Australia car but haven't gotten too far. One thing that I've wondered about when a MP4/8 was run without the barge boards. What did they do about the mounting holes in the chassis? Were they left open? Some type of plug? Maybe a little white tape?vanhookvintage wrote:Hey Jake,

I ask because I see that you've filled in the holes. Very nice job Jake.

Great result and nice to see a Mika car. My only question is, given the level of detail you have gone too for the build, is why finish it with Mclaren branding? Mika never drove the car in this spec, outside of testing. This is not a criticism, merely a question.

I like the brake reservoirs you've added, and the carbon fibre, the solder as pipes, the engine wiring, the paint -- everything! What a nice build. Congrats!
