Ships have had a surge of popularity so the Japanese kit makers, not just Tamiya, have been focusing efforts there. But with so little access to modern F1 cars why bother, look at the 1/20 kits.

Main problem is:
The big market for Tamiya is Japan. Japan prefer recent F1 cars - which are front runners.
You can't get any kind of reasonable technical access to a front running car.
And besides the license fees has gone sky-high.

It's never been a better time to be a ship modeler (even if the rivet counters bemoan inacurraciess in every new kit). Lots of previously unreleased subjects from all different eras in scales from 1/1200 to 1/200. Tons of aftermarket parts too. Wooden decks, metal barrels, and gobs of photo etch.Dino wrote:Ships have had a surge of popularity so the Japanese kit makers, not just Tamiya, have been focusing efforts there.

Shocking, isn't it?Eagle wrote:What ARE those things, a buildup model release coming out? how big are they, they look HUGE!
I posted on a maritime forum as I thought they were about 2 metres, but it's the wide angle lens. Thought to be Tamiya Yamato warships (750mm) 1/350th.

Your initial guess was correct. Look at the people and the ships which are level with them. No way that's a 1/350. 1/200th or bigger, sure!vontrips wrote:Shocking, isn't it?Eagle wrote:What ARE those things, a buildup model release coming out? how big are they, they look HUGE!

Turns out it's a 1/144 R/C ship. Pic is from the Chinese factory where they're built.

Je ne regrette rien.

OMG!!! Has the world gone completely mad...LOL! So at that scale they really are getting on for 2 metres! Have you seen all the superstructure assemblies on the background tables? Maybe it was a rush production for Xmas!MoFo wrote:Right Click -> Search Google for Image -> https://goo.gl/7IwH41

It's sad that my once number one plastic kit maker, does not make kits like they used to. Tamiya, in my opinion, made the best plastic kits. They were easy to build, had excellent, easy to follow instructions and could be built up into beautiful models with care and patience. But now I look elsewhere for my kits as Tamiya has all but deserted me. How times change..
