GB WIP. 1977 Lotus 78 Tamiya 1/20
Re: GB WIP. 1977 Lotus 78 Tamiya 1/20
Nice attention to these different versions! I thought they had the same 78 for two seasons but I was so wrong when started studying photos Do you have MFH Lotus 78/79 book? It has some nice reference pics.

Yes I have the book but sadly it doesn't have anything from the three fist races in 1977 and 1978 so there isn't anything from Argentine or South Africa.
The work on the air box goes on. magic sculp has been used to build up some parts. Here it is with an standard air box.

Good job on the airbox. A lot of the fun of modeling is researching the details.
Cheers.

Re: GB WIP. 1977 Lotus 78 Tamiya 1/20
Still trying to repair the paint disaster. I hate to paint and that is what makes models look like crap.
But I have looked in to how to get the brush skirts I need.
I bought a vinyl record brush thinking it was two complete brushes mounted together but when I disassembled it I just got a big heap of lose strands.
So I am trying another approach. I bought another brush and soaked the brushes in future to keep the strands together.
I tried it on the brush that i destroyed earlier and it seems to work.

Re: GB WIP. 1977 Lotus 78 Tamiya 1/20
I made some attempts to fix the paint without success so I gave up on it. Now I decided to at least finish the build so I stripped the paint and put on black paint from a Tamiya rattle can. it still look like crap but better than before.
The low air box and straight side pods will make it different to the other Lotus 78 kits.

Re: GB WIP. 1977 Lotus 78 Tamiya 1/20
I have started on the decals.
My new decals looked closer to the the colour on the Indycals sheet before I started to put them on the car.
On the car mine are darker and more brown but it has to do. I don't have any alternative to fall back to. But it is more visible under the photo light than in the darker cabinet with the other cars.

Re: GB WIP. 1977 Lotus 78 Tamiya 1/20 (Decals in place)
There are some small parts still to be attached but I missed to make holes in the seat for the seat belts and I don't look forward to do this with the seat and the decals in place.
The same problem goes for the 1978 car but I will make those holes before starting on decals on that one.

Another way to make brush skirts is take a strip of cloth of appropriate texture, thread gauge and glue to the inside of the side pod vertical, with fibres going vertical and horizontal. After the glued edge has dried just fray the cloth strip by removing the horizontal strands to leave only the vertical brush strands. Worked great for the brush skirt on the Renault A442B.
