Sauber C9, Tamiya, 1/24

Post by MarcoSaupe »

Hi,

I finished the year with another completed model, the Tamiya kit of the '89 LeMans winner.

It's an easy to build kit, only the air intakes for the front brake ducts look a bit strange. The rear cowling fits better than it looks on the photos. The decals were a bit on the old side as well. I used some etched parts made by Studio27, but not all parts of the set.

I painted with TS-30 from the airbrush, IMHO the perfect colour for those silver arrows. I didn't clear coat this time (that's why you see some decal edges) because the usual Mr. Super clear made the silver a bit dull and I want to try the Alclad aqua clear on a spare body before I dare to go on a completed build. Therefore the body is not glued on, also mirrors etc. are only glued with Liquitape, so I can easily put clear on later.

As usual I made Leukosilk belts and added some wires in the engine bay.

Hope you like it.

Very Nice!!! TS-30 you say???

I have the body on mine painted, but in TS-17. I may overspray it in TS-30 after seeing this one.
Perfectionist in the art of the unfinished kit......

That is just beautiful. Paint schemes like this really show the quality of a modeler - there's nowhere to hide. You've done a beautiful job inside and out. Funny enough, I finished a Sauber C9 (that looks significantly worse) last night and will probably post today as well.

Thanks :)

Defitinely, I used TS17 on some of the interior parts, and while it's ok for that, I would not use it on the bodywork, IMHO the flakes would look wrong in that scale.

Wow, the paint colour looks absolutely spot on. Such a clean build. Love it.

Looks great Marco. I always cringe at the thought of clear coats over silver paint. It always seems to dull the surface and start to react with the silver paint, leaving all sorts of problems after it dries.

I would be very interested to know more about the Alclad aqua clear you mentioned.

It's ALC 600, and it's supposed to keep the shine when applied over Alclad Chrome or similar. I tried it over this 1/200 Apollo CSM which I had painted with Alclad polished Aluminium, and it still looked fine, but the consistency of the stuff is a bit different, so I'd suggest to practise with it first.
