**Updated 12/8/20 **Robby Gordon's 1994 Valvoline Indy Car

Post by Shunter »

I have pulled out this old Tamiya Indy Car which was originally Mansells 1993 title winning car. I was never happy with the look of it and wanted to do something different with it. I got this sheet from Roly01 i think, and i always liked the colours of this car, and after attending the Gold Coast race i was pleased to know that these decals existed.
I am doing the pre-season look for the car and that was basically a 93 Lola, i am not trying to be fully accurate with it, i just wanted to make something decent from an old kit.

I have started rubbing it all back, i tried putting this in a bath of caustic soda but i always find Tamiya paint does not seem to be effected by it, so i have been sanding away. As you can figure this was not a build to be proud of. I am almost at the stage where i can get a dust of primer onto these parts.

Great project mate.

The third picture (monocoque, side on) looks awesome. Soo much effort to remove the paint and get the parts back to a smooth state! You could almost put some wheels on it in its current form and call it something from mad max. ...

Anyway, please keep us updated!!

Well after nearly 18 months since doing anything to this one I have now painted the body panels. I used Testors Blue Angel blue as I was told it is a good match for Valvoline blue, the white is Tamiya spray. This build will basically be a shelfer, so I shall rub these down a little, clear coat and that will be about it. Just nice to get some paint on it to hide the awful previous job.

Interesting project Shayne, plenty of hard work involved in the paint stripping,I use Isopropyl alcohol,it removes any paint from any surface,in minutes, and does not damage plastic, and its relatively cheap, get it from a chemists.
I have the a tameo 43rd version of the Valvoline car,so interested in seeing how yours turns out.
Keep up the good work.

Good one Shayne. This was always a good looking car. I've recently been looking for options for these Tamiya Indy Cars. This is one I didn't know about.
Cheers
