Hi,
I’m considering using the engine of the MP4/4 on the FW11 to convert the FW11 to the late 1986 model with the turbo scoops poking out. I’ll then close the scoop holes of the MP4/4 to convert it to the late 1988 version, kerbside.
Has any of you tried that & what’s your thoughts?
Cheers
Lee

The engine in the Mclaren was different to the one used by Williams, I can't remember what changed but Williams had been asking them to make changes to the engine which Honda did but Mclaren got the benefit and where able to develop the MP4/4 with the low engine cover. Are you wanting to display the engine in the Williams? If not simply add some snorkels and no one will ever know what engine is in there.

I would just change the turbo/air scoops. And leave each engine in their respective places.
I remember the "inner" turbo intakes of the MP4/4 were quite sophisticated. There was a nice Piola drawing, I might find it.
BTW, this thread is somehow duplicated. I'd recommend locking the other one, as they seem impossible to delete.

Yes, Daveyman is correct. Throughout 1987 Patrick Head at Williams was working with Honda to redesign the sump arrangement which was quite bulky. The new Honda engine for 1988 incorporated these changes which included a new slim line sump arrangement similiar to the Cosworth. This is what allowed McLaren to design the lowline feature of the MP4/4.
Assuming the engines are kitted accurately, it might sit a bit low in the Williams and also cause some issues mating to the trans.
Lee, if accuracy is what you are looking for with your proposed Williams, then it could be be more than a simple engine swap. Intercooler arrangements may differ also. Might be worth investigating a bit more.
Cheers. Tim

It might be worth studying pics of the respective MFH 1/12 kits to see how the two set-ups compare if you want the engines exposed.
Je ne regrette rien.

You might be able to get a Studio 27 Australian GP conversion kit. I have the British/Japan from 1987.mazyen wrote:Hi,
