Unidirectional CF Decals?

Post by dr_gn »

I might have asked this before in the dim and distant past, but does anyone manufacture U/D carbon decals? They'd probably be a series of very colsely spaced black lines on a dark background.

I could use small scale twill weave, but the lines have jagged edges.

Thanks.

You find that a lot on the late 80's and early 90's cars. No aftermarket company has produced that pattern yet. It's a weird omission. Maybe they think it's too delicate and modelers won't bother to use it.

I recall I saw that similar if not identical pattern on MFH 1/12 mp4/4 decal for front part of cockpit nose.

It seems like there is a lot of misunderstanding of CF in modeling and how it really looks. I think a lot of modelers simply like whats already on the market and more realistic ones would be too difficult to make, so they simply keep up on what they have already.

Could be easily done as "Digital Print" decal. Silkscreen could be difficult

Reason I ask is I'm about to embark on the tub of an MP4/6, and obtained this information from one of the senier engineers who worked on the MP4/6 chassis:

https://www.f1m.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=31306

Pretty much the entire tub is unidirectional CF, and a significant part of it isn't in rough, so the U/D is alost as visible as plain or twill weave elsewhere.

It also applies to parts such as the diffuser floor and rear wing struts.

The Tamiya mouldings actually do a pretty good job of replicating it, but as soon as you sand or fill any errors, it's gone.

BTW, the nose box is either plain or twill weave.

Cheers!

I've done that type of pattern for a 1:20 MP4/4 build years ago and printed them on clear decal paper with a laser printer. Over a silver base that looked all right. You don't get the effect of the pattern changing with the light, but then you don't get that with other cf decals either.
