Thanks, yes I was thinking something very similar, but black lines over perhaps dark grey - very low contrast. I'm not bothered about the change in appearance with viewing angle - that's just too far!

If you start with a silver base you can always tone it down with some "smoke" paint.
Easier than to brighten it up if you start with a ( too ) dark base.
