When painting a rear wing..
I’m curious to know how others hold/brace the rear wing when paint. I have one to do and it has the two recessed areas on the underside when the support posts will go. I need to paint the whole wing one colour. I’m thinking of Blu Tack in the recessed marks and a wire or something to hold it..
Ideas?
Ideas?
Re: When painting a rear wing..
I'm assuming from your description that the wing is already glued together with all elements? If so, I would recommend a dab of something stronger than blu-tack, instead maybe use some CA glue to affix a flat wooden toothpick into the recessed marks you describe, or even CA glue a sharpened end of a chopstick? That way you have a strong point of hold to be able to rotate and paint the wing without worry of it falling off the blu-tack. When finished, just break off the stick you bonded and clean up the CA glue from the recesses with a dremel tip, file, or sandpaper.
That would be my approach. Hope it helps.
Cheers,
AJ

If the wing is thick enough, I drill a small hole in the side and plug a toothpick in the hole, if the wing is on the thin side, so the pick doesn't go in that far, a bit of CA glue on the pick helps.

Ok, in that case maybe I'd try to cut a support post-like thing out of sheet, or cut a sprue (or if the diameter fits, a toothpick cut horizontally), so that it fits tightly into the recessed area.

Re: When painting a rear wing..
Hi Shane,
You mentioned two recessed areas in the wing plane. As these recesses are on the underside, I would consider squaring off the end of a piece of straight sprue and CA glue it right between the recesses. Paint the wing as normal.
Snap the sprue off then gently sand the contact area until it is as flush as possible, then touch it up with a dab of paint.
Locating the sprue mounting point in between the two recesses will allow the contact patch to be partially hidden and it will also be obscured when mounted to the wing mounts.
Cheers, Paul

For this light plastic wing I would go with sprue bits attachedattached to the wing support recessed. Instead of CA glue you can attach it with small drops of hot glue. That can be removed without sanding.

I’m also working on an AMT Lola. I hadn’t given any thought to painting the rear wing, but now that you’ve brought it up, I think I’ll do mine using a spare engine/transaxle as the holder. I’ll probably try to use a little BluTack although the slots are quite small so, maybe a little rubber cement or other temporary glue that I have.

I use a brass rod with a diameter of 1mm or smaller for such difficult parts. Drill a suitable hole and glue it in with approx. To remove, the rod is heated with a lighter and it can be removed without any major traces.
