Sealing decals doubt
Is there any difference between sealing decals or apply a varnish coat to protect?
If yes, what procedure and products should be used?

Re: Sealing decals doubt
You usually seal decals with varnish...ok some people use floor polish but well ....each to his own

Re: Sealing decals doubt
I've seen videos of decals being sealed with clearcoat, not sure if it was lacquer.
I have sealed some of mine with Tamiya TS13, with no ill effects, however, I'm not sure how this would go over older decals.
I have just applied the decals to the Tamiya Williams FW13-B, and the conditions of the decal could be described as very fragile, due to the age of the kit.
I'm very hesitant to apply a topcoat of TS13, might try a small sample area.

Re: Sealing decals doubt
Do not apply TS13 over Tamiya decals. It will wrinkle them.

Re: Sealing decals doubt
Use setting solution to bind the decals to the paint to reduce the chances of wrinkling. Also Tamiya decals is a 'wide term' - they're not all the same.mazyen wrote:Do not apply TS13 over Tamiya decals. It will wrinkle them.

Re: Sealing decals doubt
How about your decals. Do you recomend the above? I have a couple of your sets on the way to me, would be good to know before I apply them. Have not had any issues with applying TS13 over decals yet, and have used it on Tamiya, Fujimi, and Hasegawa kits.indycals wrote:Use setting solution to bind the decals to the paint to reduce the chances of wrinkling. Re: Sealing decals doubt
I'd suggest Mr. Super Clear instead, it's much less aggressive to decals, no matter which manufacturer.
Nevertheless I always do a mist coat first, before doing the wet coats. And if a decal is on an edge, where the clear might crawl under it and cause damage (e.g. if you cut a decal that goes over more than one part) I use a brush to apply a tiny bit of Future on the edge, to "glue" the decal on the part, before clearcoating.

I have been using Mr. Top Coat for years and have never had a problem. No matter which decal manufacturer.

Re: Sealing decals doubt
I have used both Future floor wax and Tamiya acrylic clear as top coat over decals and find no ill effect. Both are water base acrylic paints and are gentle on decals.
I use Future to adhere decals to models rather than relying on the glue from the sheets. This makes decals conform to curve surface better when they are warmed by either a towel or hairdryer.
I had decals pulled away by masking tapes after clear coating when I have to do touch ups when they were only relying on the decal glue. With Future as glue, the decals are almost like a layer of paint to the surface.

No problem with TS13 and my decals, but I do recommend using Solvaset to help bind them just to be safe.dellboy42 wrote:How about your decals. Do you recomend the above?
