Where did all the Tamiya Ferrari kits go?

Post by ringleheim »

I was just browsing the Tamiya.com online catalog, and noticed that everything "Ferrari" from 1/12 F1 cars to 1/20 F1 cars to 1/24 sports cars is gone from their online catalog.

They have had a lot of 1/24 sports car kits in their catalog for years and years, and now it's all gone.

Presumably they have lost their licensing rights for the time being. Does anyone know more about this? Who has the rights now? Is Tamiya expected to re-develop its relationship with Ferrari in the future? I hope so!

A Ferrari license cost money. Quite a bit apparently, because that's how Ferrari makes a lot of their money and because they can...
So to make the license worthwhile you have to sell X amount of kits. If sales are slow(er) because the market is saturated and/or you don't have new stuff coming out to sell, it may make sense to suspend the license ( and the royalty payments ) for some time. ( It may even convince some people to buy now while they're still available ).
Then later, if you pick the license up again, customers will buy again ( and you may have new products to sell as well ).
Case in point is Hiro's Ferrari sabbatical.
The Tamiya kits will come back again.

Tamiya made an official announcement last spring, that they'd discontinue all Ferrari kits in the summer of 2019. Order sheet was sent out to retailers, and I believe 2019 Shizuoka hobby show was the last chance for stores to place orders.

My guess is that Tamiya's Ferrari license will be on short-term on-demand basis, much like the McLaren's.

I wonder who they will look to replace the licensing budget with... if they haven’t already?

I still see some Ferrari F1 kits at a local hobby shop so if they're there they're probably still at other shops in other areas, too. Online too, I'd guess.

I've just had a nosey on ebay and all 1/20 kits are seemingly way overpriced :(

Once again, I suggest we look to our friend Mac. He currently has 41 assorted Tamiya Ferrari in stock at rock-bottom prices. T3 kits $19. F189 in both versions $20. F12000 and 2001 $26. He is now offering parts for several Tamiya kits as well. I'm sure he would appreciate the business. I always check Mac before looking to ebay.
