White metal body parts

Post by billgtp »

I have an early MFH kit of a Ferrari 312T4. The body, wings suspension is all white metal which I really dislike to work with. Must of the suspension I rebuilt with brass tube. But what to do with body and wings surface looks like 400 grit sand paper besides pin holes.
Any suggestions would really help. Shot them with automotive filler primer?

Use a variety of methods. I always start by using various grades of sandpaper, sanding sticks, scotch pads, files, wire wool etc to get them as good as possible. I then prime the parts and check for pinholes and any areas that need attention. I use an automotive stopper/filler to correct any defects, re-prime as necessary and repeat this until I'm happy with the surface. Then final prime and finish as required.
I hate white metal too. Very dirty to work with and a real pain..

Hi Bill,

I'm not sure if you are asking how to prep white metal parts or how to replace them.

Steve has covered the prep question really well. If you are aiming to replace the white metal body and wing pieces, I'd be inclined to use various shapes cut from sheet styrene and modify each piece with two part epoxy as required.

Cheers, Paul

With 1/43 cars, I much prefer to replicate the bodies in resin. Much easier to work with. Surely the T4 is a relatively easy scracth possibility, but I guess the idea is not that, right?
I'd go with heavy steel wool wor, then puttying/priming, but honestly thats a case of trying to clone the main bodywor in resin. And in this case its an easy subject...

I use filler for smaller imperfections or sprayputty (??) to fill/cover larger problems. Both are available as rattle cans from the hardware store. I decant both from the rattlecan into my airbrush. This way I can perfectly control the thickness of the paint. Both paints can easily be sanded...
