What causes this paint problem?

Post by bossy122 »

This happens from time to time and to this day I can't figure out why. Why does the paint recede along seam lines ( as pictured). On this subject, I soaked it in tire bleach overnight, washed it thouroghly with a brush, especially along seams , etc. Primed it with 2 or 3 coats and then this happens. I've had it happen on plastic as well, more often than not using gloss black. Is the paint ( Tamiya TSs) not getting mixed enough when I shake the can? Any ideas will be appreciated, thanks.

I think maybe applying the paint too heavy and before the previous coat has tacked off. The new layer wets up the under layer and then it runs away from the seams and pools up?

Just build the paint up in several thin layers (about 5), then it won´t be a problem!

Definitely a too heavy wet coat, can easily happen with the TS colors in that case; try to spray a light, mist coat over edges and panel lines first - if you spray directly from the can that's a bit more difficult that with the airbrush of course, maybe try to increase the distance. Spray the wet, shiny finish later.

The coats are too thick. That’s the problem with spraying from a can. Also. Colors like yellow, red en black can cause these problems when spraying too thick.

To add to this, I typically have this when I dont give enough drying time between coats either. Yellow is the worst color to paint for me.

Also on yellow especially you could tint your primer with some yellow to create a beige primer. Much easier than trying to build up yellow over grey or white..

My theory is: try and use a NEW firm toothbrush in those areas when you clean the body with soapy water to remove the "plastic Injection release agent" that comes from the molds...'just a thought, as I think i remember hearing / seeing this problem before - and this method seems to help...anyway, it can't hurt to try.

Fortunatley, there's a huge pinhole on the gear lever blister that I managed to overlook at the primer stage that sticks out like a blistered thumb against the yellow, so i'll have to strip it and try again. Lemonade out of lemons.
