Yes and it only took Porsche 19 years to win it. Ferrari did it on their first year. That said the 512 was thrown together rather quickly. To bad the factory did not race the 512M as that was as fast if not faster than the 917's in 1971. The Sunoco Penske 512M was very unlucky especially when porsches were around taking it out(Daytona 911 and Sebring Pedro's 917). The 512 S did win Sebring in 1970 after all the 917's broke.Icon_Modeler wrote:Give them a few months and they will be releasing the Jules car. All it would take is a few body/chassis mods and the engine out of the 956!!
Someone commented on the Ferrari 512. All I can say is not a LeMans winner! the 917 was and is, twice!!

Both of the most recent releases are models that can evolve into releases of different versions in month's, or years to come, without a huge amount of effort. The Tyrrell 006, and the Porsche 936 were both at their essence, relatively simple designs, that evolved gradually over their competitive lives. The biggest change in the 936 was when Porsche mated the aborted 2.65 liter Indycar engine, and 917 gearbox to it, and the 936/81 was born. The 006 evolved mostly aerodynamically, with oil coolers and the rear wing moved around.

As far as I know the 936 always had a 917 gearbox. In fact most all of the running gear was from the 917 parts bins. That is how Porsche was able to put together a Group 6 car so quickly when the class was announced.ronnie1972 wrote:917 gearbox

Re: 1/12 MFH October - could it be a Porsche 936???
Agreed, the 936 was a bit of a Frankenstein, mostly built with leftover bits from the 908's, and 917's. I should have been more specific, the four speed gearbox that was used in the 936/81 was the one built for the 917/10, and 917/30. The 2.65 liter engine pumped out about a hundred more pony's than the previous unit. The five speed box of the previous 936's had become something of a Achille's Heel, especially during the 1978 LM 24 Hours, and the engineers at Weissach sensibly realized it wouldn't be able to cope with the extra BHP from the Indycar engine. So they mated a couple of mothballed 917/30 boxes to the two 1981 cars.

When you want to create a race winner and only got 6 months left you have to take a look into your stash.
Porsche got not much money at this time period and only a handful of good engineers.
And time was running.
The result was great, with some faults. But it was a winner and that counts.

Not only was money an issue. Originally the 936 was an undercover project by the engineers as they didn't want to fight for class wins but overall victories. The story goes, that Mr Porsche, when in Weissach for other things, asked sheepishly "Can I see it?"
