Keep Decals and tires away from each other!

Post by Steffen_T »

During the last weekend I started organizing all the kits I have.
I took the instructions and the decals out of their boxes so they are all stored at the same place.
While doing this to the Tamyia McLaren MP4/7 I noticed a decalsheet that had turned useless:

I don't really care, as I already have a replacement sheet with the Marlin Decals, but I thought I should post this to make you aware of this kind of reaction.
The decals had no protection paper and were lying below the closed bag with the tires. There was no direct contact between the decals and the tires!
I have to admit though, I bought this kit second hand from ebay and don't remember if the decals had been in this conditions when I received them.

It's not the first time I notice such a reaction of the tires. The wooden cabinet I have has the same tire marks on the buttom. So far I have only noticed this reaction with Tamiya tires, as I only had Tamiya cars standing in this area.

Thank you for the public service announcement. I am so paranoid of other things happening to decals but never this.

In the old AMT annuals, and others from the 60’s and 70’s, the tireswould ‘melt’ the plastic if in contact with it. Best to keep everything separated.

Early Belkits kits also have this issue, the tyres can eat plastic and mess up everthing.

Well, I have the Revell Jaguar XKSS kit from early 90's. I put the tire on the plated wheels and think that melting plastic would not be the case with 90's case. I was wrong, after about a year and half, I found the area that I had sanded away the plating became sticky and start to deform.

Now for every new kit, I cut a piece from the part tree and put it into the tire bag to test it out. As I am a slow builder, a kit would not need the tires on the rims for at least a year.

One reason I prefer resin tires.

The Revell 1/12 Mercedes Gullwing tires melted the rims quickly and left a permanent mark on the shelf while the Airfix 1/12 Bentley took almost 30 years to melt the rims. But my worst experience was the Ilya Muromets from Maquette. The plastic bag were the sprues was in melted the plastic. The fuselage became useless.

For virtually every kit I get, I bag the decals with a fresh zip lock bag.
It's cheap insurance!
