Hawaiian Tropics 1/12th Porsche 935

Post by daves »

I have been asked by a fellow member, Joe, about the changes needed to create the HT 935. My long time close friend Dale King built one many years ago and helped me a lot.
This is a link to his instructions. http://gpma.org/?p=554
Another fellow modeler and Porsche fan was Matt Burnett, aka Monkey Claws. Matt passed away a year or so ago. Matt resin casted many of the parts needed for the conversion.
Maybe someone out there has some of these as I know Matt had offered them out just before he died. Matt spent time in Hawaii and was a great guy.
The obvious changes are the front valiance and running lights, the side skirts, the the rear wing changed to a double. The HT car was a twin turbo. I did not make that change. My modeling skills were not up to it at the time. Dale made the change and it is described in his article. The paint color is Tamiya bright red over bright orange. The decals are still available including the wheel covers. I have seen them on Wim's site, BestBalsaKits. One subtle change is the drivers mirror is mounted high on the door and the tires are Goodyear branded. I included some pictures of the Martini and the HT car to see the differences.
Hope this helps.

Thanks so much Dave. I have a set of the decals and when I started doing research, I discovered some of the changes you have sited. I look forward to reading the article linked over the weekend. I especially want to see if I am up to it.

You did a great job on that classic.

Best regards,

Joe.

Hey Dave,
Thanks for posting your great build!
I have photos of the 1:1 car to post it was a real treat seeing it in real life,it was quite a bright red as you say almost like the Ferrari Ts bright red but a bit orangey.
What strikes you when you see it is how low and large the rear spoiler is!
A great era! 8)

Hi

I saw the same car at Daytona 24 hours in 2009. According to THE bible of every 934/935 raced it is the correct car. During it's years it has had a lot of different bodystyles. Even converted to K3. The K3 with apple computer livery is the same chassis by the way! It was restored back to the 1979 Le Mans livery. There are some differences in the small stickers applied here and there, but looks the part. Here are some of the shots I took:

More on my Flickr account that hasn't gone the Photobucket way. Yet?
