Tamiya Braun Tyrrell 020

Post by lvndeva »

Build this kit around 3 years ago. Typical Tamiya quality, parts fitting excellent, except for the engine cover. I did some detailing on the engine bay, added wiring. The engine ‘rod’ (not sure what’s the correct term) is custom made. Used bare metal foil for the heat shield, as well as mirror reflectors. The shocks were aftermarket, and it looks fabulous. Radiator was painted using Alclad polished aluminum. I also used Alclad exhaust manifold to ‘burn’ the exhaust. Seat belts are from Studio27. And I also made a scratch build antenna. Decals were from Studio 27, depicting S. Modena’s car. Car was painted using Zero paints colour, they have specific colour for this car. The white portion is also painted on. Finally clear coated using Mr. Super Clear. The white has faded over time, looking more ‘racing white’. Not sure why could be the clear coat itself. But I’m beginning to suspect it’s the Tamiya Pure white.

This car was destroyed once when I moved house, I’m glad I was able to put it back together. Overall an excellent car to build, and certainly one of the more striking cars in my collection, largely due to the unconventional shape with its high nose, and colour.

Good looking Tyrrell. I fought a battle with that kit a few years ago. You make me think I should pull it back out of the closet and try again.

Yes, really nice!

One question, what did you use for the antenna? Scratch or aftermarket?

I did the antenna myself. Theres a youtube video i made explaining how to do it:

Thanks for your comments guys.
Just a general question to everyone here, any ideas why the white painted part is yellowed, but not the white 'Braun' markings?
I always though that the clear coat will sometimes cause yellowing, but how come the 'Braun' markings is not yellow?
Could it be the white paint itself yellowing?

Very nice build!

It looks like it is the paint that is yellowing. Which Tamiya white did you used, acrylic or enamel? I have used Tamiya acrylic white with no yellowing.

Sometimes adding a tiny bit of blue to the white would make it look "whiter".

Thanks for the tip about adding blue, i have to try this!

I used Tamiya TS26 Pure White spray paint for the white areas. I noticed this yellowing on other models as well which i used TS26. Similar case, whereby the white decals stay white, but the white painted areas become yellow after couple of years. Really weird. I'm gonna have to keep an eye on this.
