Hello everyone,
I am new to the forum and to F1 modelling in general but have been an avid F1 fan since 1993. This is my third kit and I chose it as it signalled the start of a new era in F1 in the form of sponsorship and wings to increase downforce. As most people know, this kit is a fudge, having a few extra parts to make the car look similar to a 49B but still missing a lot of important changes over the original 49. For some reason Tamiya didn't correct these issues, nor remove the battery box compartment when they re-released the kit in 2015. Nevertheless I ploughed on regardless and based my model on the appearance of the car at the 1968 Mexican GP which Graham Hill won to seal the championship.
I added a few extra details to the model namely:
1. Leather seat covering (from a leather wallet purchased from TK Maxx)
2. Gauze mesh covers for the intake trumpets (from Spotmodel)
3. Gold leaf and other sponsorship decals (from Hiroboy)
4. Smoke wash of radiators and bolts
5. Plumbing for the fuel pump on bottom LHS (I still need to add a green wire)
6. Rear brake lines
7. Photoetch screw heads for the access covers in front of the cockpit
8. Wiring for the instrument panel
I also re-sprayed the supplied chrome plated wheels, master cylinder caps and wing mirrors with TS 83 Metallic Silver to give a less toy-like look to the car. I also trimmed off the chrome gearbox protection thingy which the later Hewland gearbox did not have. I also painted the gearbox gun metal grey to match the Hewland 'box.
Overall I am satisfied with the finished result and it was a pleasure to build, with the rear suspension being the trickiest part to assemble. My next project is the MFH 1/12 Mclaren MP4/23 (has anyone else built this?) and then following that the Tamiya 1/12 Ferrari 312T4, my aim eventually to have a car from every decade!
Thanks for looking!
Mark

It is indeed the Tamiya 1/12 Williams FW14B . This was a real challenge, being my first model. The amount of rattle cans I got through was incredible as I had to re-do the paint several times due to mistakes!indygp2001 wrote:Mark, your 49B is Fantastic! - Welcome to the F1M site...
