Primer Under Zero Paints?

Post by vanhookvintage »

Hi All,

My first time using Zero Paints (Rob Walker Blue for the Lotus 18). Can I use Tamiya Fine White Primer under it? I have some 2-part primer on order - should I wait and use that?

EDIT: I should have mentioned that this is a white metal kit.

Thanks a lot,
Greg

Hi Greg,

I once used Tamiya primer on a model and had some reaction when I sprayed Zero Paint on it afterwards.

Now I only use Zero Paint primer and no problems at all. I would wait on the order...

For the resin model, it is better to use a two-component primer. For a plastic model, you can also use Tamiya, the main thing then is not to make very wet layers of paint.

I use tamiya spray cans as primer. Had not problems doing this but make sure to build up color with mist coats!
No idea for resin as i haven't done a resin model yet.

The only time I had problems with tamiya primer and zero paints was when I didn't lay enough primer down initially so it got to the bare plastic with too thick of zero paint coats

I use Tamiya primer for everything, plastic, resin, white metal and photo-etch and never had any problems with using Zero paints over the top.

same for me!.

But make sure Zero is sprayed in several thin mist coats until required color is reached.
