Removing parts from a magnetic polisher

Post by Leftkeys »

Some of the parts are small. Some are even sampler. And after polishing, the stuff is magnetized. I’m picking small parts out with tweezers. What’s the alternative, what do you guys do? Thanks.

I put a small magnet in a plastic bag and get the pins out before the parts. Be sure to count the number of parts you put into the tumbler to be sure you get them all.

I use a paper paint strainer that you can get free at most auto paint stores. I pour the pins and parts into it over a jar so I can reuse the fluid and let it dry over night. When dry, I put them on a shallow plate and pick the parts out. Takes a little time, but I don't miss anything that way.

Good tip on using a magnet like that!
Also, I lay out the parts I want to polish on the table and make a picture with my phone beforehand. After the polisher is ready I can verify wether I found all of them

When dealing with small parts I don’t put in many at a time, I have magnet I bought on ebay that lets you retract and drop the pins. So the white metal should all stay in the container. I make sure I have all of my parts and set them aside to dry. Sometimes a piece or two end up in the pins so I have to look through them until it turns up. Usually not too hard though

I pick the parts out by hand after spreading the pins and parts out a paper towel. That way Iknow I got all of them. Then I let the pins dry on the paper towel to be reused later.
Cheers,
Chris

Thanks, guys. The magnets in a plastic bag is inspired. Works great. Then I laid the parts out on a blue paper towel to dry. I have to admit, I love the way the parts come out of the polisher.

I use shop magnets for holding tools but not in a plastic bag and just litely run over the top while the parts sit on paper towels, depositing pins on a separate paper towel to dry, move parts around on paper to get all the pins out and then done

Just have to be careful if picking up small parts with the pins, but I check this by sireafing pins out

This method allows me to polish all parts of a 1/12 MFH in a a couple of hours
