Hi Emersonsquirrel,
I'm currently doing the original Tamiya kit - the BT50 after having cut down a few of them lately . So that's not really a conversion just some corrections to the kit to get the Montreal 1982 winner.
After that I will probably change the subject back to Tyrrells (003, 009, 012)
Thanks to you for building and showing the cars
Glad you got the pack, and yes, just checked it: Patrese had santal much later than he had blue parmalats So Monaco is RIGHT as you did it!
ED: scachmo james blew it again!!

I've got the AMD BT48 kit, so I will not do it as a conversion. Not really sure if I shall be happy about it as I quite like converting kits.
Me to, I'm really into converting kits so much aswell.
Seeing this set of BT49's makes me want to make a '79 BT49
I still have one AMD kit laying around (but planned that one for the '80 version), if I could make a resin copy of the main body....
And/or a '82 BT49D.
Might just do that one from a BT50, with a cossie engine (have a spare one in my parts box(es)).

Sorry to contradict you. Checked my references again and found a picture in Christopher Hiltons "1982 The inside story of the sensational Grand Prix season" (BTW a very good book). Page 18 shows Patrese with helmet in car in the pitlane (looks like Monaco). There he has blue Parmalats at the top and Patrese at the chin of the helmet and of course santal on the visor. (I don't want to display the pic here for copyright reasons.)

I think converting a Tamiya BT50 chassis is easier than a resin copy. And on a AMD transkit you can't add a Cosworth as it is a curbside kit.
JM: YOU ARE RIGHT!!! about Patrese helmet I mean!!
I supose I will remeber it now!
You are right to say a BT50 is maybe easier, specially if you want a detailed engine one. Nevertheless, sanding the AMD nose will lead to an acceptable BT49D.
And the truth is that BT50 and BT49D sidepods are more different than it seems

And then later this.

So the '79 form a AMD kit and the '82 one from a BT50 with cossie.
I love the BT49 family. I have also the BT49 AMD transkit on my workbench and I look forward to do a 1981 version of th BT49.
I hope my car will look half as good as yours...
Can you please help me : was the windshield of the BT49 in 1981 black or transparent blue as on the BT49D and the BT50 ?
I saw you put some white on the inside of the windshield which I saw on different ref pictures...but I don't know if it was put on the whole windshield inside
