Texture on FW 14

Post by billgtp »

Tamiya molded texture(carbon fiber?) on alot of parts to the 1/12 scale FW14.Like the front wing.
My problem is I dont see this in any pictures I have of the real car.The texture
So are they textured on the real car or just carbon fiber.
Maybe my pictures are junk
Any help would be great. Thanks

I have seen a Ferrari front wing from that era and it is smooth. I am guessing the Williams is the same. I think the texture is Tamiya's way of giving you the CF effect without having to use decals.

Depending on who did the carbonfiber, it can be rough or bumpy. Most of the stuff I see through work however is smooth due to what ever resin or something thats on/in it. It may depend on how it's made. I know I've seen pics of tip plates that were textured on real cars. (the wing end plates) Might not be this way on the FW14 however.

Isn't the texture dependant on how it as constructed? It is the same with fiberglass. If you lay the CF or FG on top then you get a texture of the cloth. If you use a female mould then you get whatever the finish is on the female mould.

Texture on FW14/FW14b

There is texture on the outsides of the front wing endplates and also the outside of the radiator ducting, underneath the main bodywork.
All other areas are smooth, so i would sand off the texture on the other areas and use carbon fibre decal.

I would think, at least on race cars, it ALL would be smooth, due to aero concerns.
