Engine Exhausts

Post by Cjpb »

I have pulled my Tamiya F1 kits out of the closet again and I am doing the Lotus 78 Mk III and the Tyrrell P34 kits. I have tried to be careful assembling the two sets of 4 pipes that glue to the engine but no matter what I do I can not get the ends to be in alignment. Anybody else have this problem and a solution. Thanks.

1-don't lose their numbers, mistakeing them is bad!!
2-dry fit them to the engine side, it'll help as a template. But do not cement them!!
3. then add to them, this time with cement, th 4-1 joint.
4- let dry, you might use blue tak to hold them.
5-Welcome!!! :)

I had the same problem on my Williams FW 07. In the end I glued everthing together and cerefully heated and bend it to shape..worked good.

This is where solder is handy.I first get a solder that is the same diameter of the pipes.Cut the pipes or do not attach to collector.Bend to same shape as pipe. The solder bends to fit with no problem. You may have to drill a larger hole in the cylinder heads.Another plus is if the headers are chrome or stainless you polish the solder to get the effect you want.

Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate them. I am interested in the solder replacement for the exhausts. I know there are different types of solder so which should you use? billgtrp, could you elaborate more on your technique?

I've had solder do funky stuff as it ages.

I must've built too many Tamiya Cosworths... I can put those pipes together with my eyes closed ;-)

Solid solder no resin or acid core.I forgot but alot of the hobby shops(mine does) carry a soft alum rod that also works great
Detail Masters has it but i dont think its diameter is correcy for 1/12
Need to check Small Parts they may have it
You can use clears to give them a burnt look

Here is my tutorial on the subject
http://www.alexkung1.com/scale/tips/exhaust.htm

It took a while but I did eventually find some solder with a diamter I could use on the 312T3.

Using the kit parts I tended to use teh engine block to make sure the pins line up while I glue the otehr end of the exhaust pipes. Also test fit the engine block and exhaust into the chassis as there is sometimes a mating point there too
